Pilates Before and After Hip or Knee Replacement in Arlington, MA
Whether your hip or knee replacement is scheduled for next month or happened last year, individual Pilates in Arlington helps you go into surgery stronger and come out of it moving with confidence.
Before Surgery: Going In Strong
The weeks before a hip or knee replacement are not wasted time. The stronger and more mobile you are going into surgery, the faster and easier the recovery tends to be — surgeons increasingly recommend exactly this kind of preparation, sometimes called prehab. We work on the strength around the joint being replaced, on the other leg and the core that will carry you while you heal, on hip and ankle mobility, and on the breath, which matters more than most people expect for pain and sleep in the days after surgery. Everything is adapted to a joint that already hurts.
After Surgery: A Careful Return
Once your surgeon has cleared you to exercise and your physical therapy is under way or complete, Pilates gives you a structured way to rebuild — strength, balance, and confidence in a joint you've been protecting for years. I follow your surgeon's precautions precisely; some movements are off the table for a while, and I know which ones. Sessions use mat work, props, and studio equipment, chosen according to what your joint is ready for.
Why Individual Sessions
A group class can't accommodate a hip that isn't allowed to bend past a certain point, or a knee that's three weeks out of surgery. One-on-one, every exercise is chosen for where you are this week, and adjusted as you progress. As a certified Pilates instructor and a yoga therapist, I also work on the fear of moving that often lingers after joint surgery, which slows recovery as much as the joint itself.
Alongside Your Surgical Team
This work complements your surgeon and your physical therapist; it does not replace them. Bring your post-operative instructions to the first session, and we build from there.
